Shrek, The Musical, Jr.

PLOT SUMMARY

Shrek, a grumpy, gruff, green ogre, lives alone in a swamp. The world is fearful and mocking of him, and he is more than happy to leave the world to itself. Suddenly, his hermit existence is thrown open, when a group of homeless fairy tale characters — Pinocchio, the Gingerbread Man, the Three Little Pigs, and others — burst upon his swamp, seeking refuge from the persecution of the cruel, vertically-challenged Lord Farquaad. Shrek seeks out Farquaad, who offers him a deal: if Shrek rescues the Princess Fiona (whom Farquaad wishes to marry for her crown), then Farquaad will ensure the return of Shrek’s swamp by returning the fairy tale creatures to their homes. In a desperate attempt to regain his swamp’s hermetic peace, Shrek ventures out into the world for the first time in his life. He travels to Princess Fiona’s prison, rescues her from a fire-breathing dragon, and then – scariest of all – is forced to get to know the princess as he tries to bring her back to evil Farquaad. To the determinedly unsocial ogre’s dismay, Fiona is very different from what he expected a princess to be. She may even provoke Shrek’s most novel experience yet: Love.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

Shrek

A big, green, terrifying ogre who lives alone on a swamp. He begins the story as a grumpy hermit, but reveals his layers and eventually becomes the hero. Should be played by a strong actor and singer. High baritone or tenor.

Fiona

The beautiful princess of Far Far Away, she transforms into an ogre every night when the sun sets. She’s rescued by Shrek and eventually falls in love with him. Quirky, blunt, and multitalented, she is not an ordinary princess.

Donkey

A talking donkey. Quite the chatterbox, he is easily frightened and pushy, but also an optimist with heart. He is not deterred by Shrek's looks and practically forces himself into his good graces. The actor needs to have a great sense of humor.

Dragon

A dragon that has been charged with guarding Princess Fiona. Imposing and flirtatious, but tired of her job as the glorified babysitter. She eventually falls in love with Donkey. Must be a great singer.

Gingy

A gingerbread man initially kidnapped by Lord Farquaad. His wit and resolution help him both avoid trouble and inspire the rest of the fairytale creatures.

Lord Farquaad

The comically short, ruthless ruler of Duloc. Self-absorbed, lonely, and cruel. He is in search of a princess to marry so that he can become king. Has an intensely unfair bias against fairytale creatures that stems from a resentment of his father.

Pinocchio

The leader of the fairytale creatures. He is an animated puppet whose nose grows every time he lies. Plenty of sass with a penchant for lying.
