Our July 2 concert will include the reading of a sonnet by Emma Lazarus
entitled “The New Colossus,” which has inspired hundreds of thousands of Americans.
It includes these words:
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
Lazarus wrote the poem in 1883 to raise money for the construction of a pedestal for the
Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World). In 1903, the poem was cast onto a bronze
plaque and mounted inside the pedestal’s lower level.
During our streamed presentation on July 2, we want to celebrate our community and share our stories.
We would love to hear from our friends and supporters, but we invite you to participate even
if you’ve never been to the Rubicon before!
Please help us by recording a video answer to one of the following questions and sending it to us. You can record the answers on your phone or with a camera – whatever is easiest!
Where and when did your family come to the United States?
Please state your name, the city you live in now and the country your ancestors came from. If you know the particulars, i.e. “Ellis Island, 1910,” please tell us that as well. You may answer in English or any preferred language. If you happen to have a photo or photos of that relative (not required) you could scan and send, please share that, too.
What do you love about America (in a word or a few words)?
What does America mean to you (in one word or a short sentence)?
Please keep your answers short. If you record the answer on your phone,
please use the horizontal format and send to:
Joseph Demaria at jdemaria@rubicontheatre.org
If the file is too large to send via e-mail, contact Joseph
as he can give you an upload link to use and talk you through it.
Please send your answers by June 6 so that we have plenty of time to set the stories to music.
Once we receive your submission, our Guest Services staff will
call you to give you a secured code for your FREE TICKET to the event.
As there may be some duplication, please don’t be disappointed if your
answer doesn’t appear in our July 2 program. We’ll be putting many more on social media
a couple of weeks before the holiday presentation.
