SYNOPSISThe story revolves around a Baker and his wife who wish to have a child. When the neighborhood witch pays them a visit and reveals to them that she placed a curse on their family, the two set off on a journey into the woods to reverse the spell. Also in the woods is Cinderella, running from the ball, Little Red Riding Hood, the Wolf (who loves tasty little girls), the Witch’s daughter Rapunzel, and two Princes who are chasing after their loves. In the end, they all learn to “be careful what you wish for.”

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

 

NARRATOR

An educated male or female who speaks with authority. He gets unwillingly caught up in the action. Vocal Range: G2-E4.

 

THE MYSTERIOUS MAN

A hermit who speaks in riddles and has a lot to hide. On the run from responsibilities. A good actor with a strong presence and good singing voice. Vocal Range: G2-E Flat 4.

 

CINDERELLA

Sweet and pure of heart, but no simp. Yearns for a better life. Good actress and a great singer. Vocal Range: G3-G5.

 

CINDERELLA’S FATHER

A man under the thumb of his second wife. Out of touch and ineffectual. Should be a good comic.

 

CINDERELLA'S STEPMOTHER

Vain, horrible and emotionally abusive to Cinderella. A strong singer and actress.

Vocal Range: A3-F Sharp 5.

 

LUCINDA, FLORINDA (STEP-SISTERS)

Spoiled, vain, selfish, and cruel to Cinderella. Strong and confident singers and comedic actresses. Vocal Range: C4-A Flat 5.

 

JACK

An earnest, dim-witted, but kind young lad whose best friend is a cow. His foolish actions set the plot tumbling out of control. A very strong singer. Vocal Range: B2-G4

 

JACK'S MOTHER

A single mother who’s been beaten down by a life of poverty while raising a clueless, if well-meaning son. Should be a good comedic actress. Vocal Range: B flat 3-F5.

 

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD

A precocious young girl with a big mouth. She isn’t intimidated easily, which is a dangerous thing in the woods. A very strong young singer and comedic actress. Vocal Range: B flat 3-F5.

 

RED RIDING HOOD'S GRANDMOTHER

Feisty old woman with a soft heart for Red. She also isn’t intimidated easily. She gets eaten.

 

THE BAKER

A man struggling with responsibility. His lack of confidence in himself is ruining his marriage. He finds a new self-reliance in the woods. Must be a fine actor and singer. Vocal Range: A Flat 2-G4.

 

THE BAKER'S WIFE

A mid-western housewife type, desperately longing for a different life. Not certain what she wants, she waffles between motherhood or living a more glamorous life of royalty. Vocal Range: F3-G5.

 

THE WITCH

The Witch is Rapunzel’s overprotective, once beautiful mother, grown bitter for having been cursed with ugliness. A strong actress with a powerful singing voice. Vocal Range: F3-G5.

 

RAPUNZEL

An overly sheltered teenager, longing to get out and see the world. She eventually stands up to her mother, the Witch. A sympathetic actress with a lilting soprano singing voice. Vocal Range: B3-A5.

 

RAPUNZEL'S PRINCE

Classic storybook prince. Heroic, confident and charming. A commanding singer. Vocal Range: C Sharp 3–E4.

 

CINDERELLA'S PRINCE

See “Rapunzel’s Prince”. Vocal Range: B2-F4.

 

WOLF

A seductive predator. Vocal Range: B Flat 2-G Flat 4.

 

STEWARD

An efficient and enthusiastic manservant. Does whatever is needed regardless of personal safety.

 

MILKY WHITE

Female or Male. A forlorn cow who’s seen better days. Jack’s best friend. Comedic abilities a plus.
